ZTE has been working on its under-display camera tech since it first introduced it on the Axon 20 5G. Now that it is confident with the third generation of its UDC tech, ZTE is bringing the bleeding edge feature to the Axon 40 Ultra. This marks the first time that the brand is implementing an under-display camera on its flagship phone–last year’s Axon 30 Ultra opted for a punch-hole display.

Compared to its predecessor, the Axon 40 Ultra uses a slightly larger 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a lower 120hz refresh rate (the Axon 30 Ultra came with 144hz). With this change, ZTE is using a new UDC Pro chip in driving the display to make the 16-megapixel selfie snapper usable even if it’s under the display. Being the brand’s third-generation tech, we expect the selfie shooter to take better photos than the UDC camera of the Galaxy Z Fold3.

Aside from the needed hardware for the under-display camera, the Axon 40 Ultra’s panel supports 10-bit color, covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and has a 1440hz high frequency PWM dimming.

Being ZTE’s flagship phone the Axon 40 Ultra has a triple 64-megapixel camera setup: the main and ultra-wide-angle cameras use a custom IMX 787 sensor, while the periscope camera uses an unknown 1/2″ sensor. Accompanying those cameras is a ToF sensor and a flicker sensor. To maximize the power of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the Axon 40 Ultra can record 8K video through all three of its cameras.

Keeping the lights on is a large 5000mAh battery that supports 80w wired charging. Variants start from an 8GB/256GB model, and you can opt for a maxxed-out 16GB/1TB model.
