With changes in the economy lately, Canalys reports in its Q2 2022 report that global smartphone shipments took another dive, which fell by 9% on a year-to-year basis. “Economic headwinds, sluggish demand, and inventory pileup have resulted in vendors rapidly reassessing their portfolio strategies for the rest of 2022,” Canalys Research Analyst Runar Bjørhovde said.
Based on their report, Canalys explained that the bulk of the slowdown in global smartphone shipments in 2022 is mostly in the mid-range segment, where there’s an oversupply. This has forced brands to make adjustments, especially since consumers have preferred to purchase phones at lower-priced segments.
“While component supplies and cost pressures are easing, a few concerns remain within logistics and production, such as some emerging markets’ tightening import laws and customs procedures delaying shipments,” Canalys Analyst Toby Zhu explains. “In contrast to last year’s pent-up demand, consumers’ disposable income has been affected by soaring inflation this year.
As for the top five brands in global smartphone shipments, Samsung still takes the lead at 21% as it strengthens its mid-range Galaxy A-series for 2022. Apple, on the other hand, was able to maintain its positioning at second with a market share of 17%. This is credited to the demand for its iPhone 13 series.
Rounding up the top 5 are Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo, with market shares of 14%, 10%, and 9% respectively.
