The current flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 has been around for barely a month, yet reports say that Qualcomm already has plans for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
According to Digital Chat Station, the next-gen Snapdragon 8 will have a 1+2+2+3 CPU configuration: one Cortex-X3, two Cortex-A720, two A710, and three A510. In their code names, 1x Makalu-Elp, 2x Makalu, 2x Matterhor, and 3x Klein-R1.
The Cortex-X3 and A720 promise an up to 30% uplift in peak CPU performance compared to the X1/A78 cores and a slight jump from the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Safe to say, this is for performance at equal clock speeds.
Moreover, the next-gen Snapdragon 8 will probably be the first mobile chipset to feature four different CPU cores—the current chipsets use three kinds. This makes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 special, in addition to the unusual CPU configuration.
The next-gen Snapdragon 8 is also said to have an Adreno 740 GPU, although no further details were mentioned.
Having said all that, we can expect the next-gen Snapdragon 8 to deliver a next-gen performance as well.
Knowing Qualcomm, it will announce its new flagship chipset at the end of the year, and in Hawaii, which explains all the Hawaii-themed code names.
