That’s right: Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri took to Twitter today to announce the software’s latest feature. Fans of certain personalities on the platform can now pay for subscriptions in order to gain access to exclusive content, interaction platforms, and others. These are now called Instagram Subscribers.

As a result, there are numerous functions carried along with this introduction. An example is for influencers to post stories and go live only viewable by their subscriber base. Comments dropped below posts will also display limited badges only available to those who pay for them. That’s one way to show you’re a super-fan to others!

Another feature brought into the mix is Subscriber Chat. Instead of 1-on-1 DMs with your fanbase, influencers can instead opt for a group chat of up to 30 subscribers in one place. It fosters a sense of community for these Instagram Subscribers and also makes it much easier to manage for everyone involved. We haven’t exactly heard what the case will be for those with more than 30 of these subscribers, but our guess is that these will be split into digital micro-communities in one way or another. There is a possibility of tiering via payment, but as of now nothing has been announced.

Lastly, going to your favorite Instagram profile (if you’re one of their Instagram subscribers) toggles a “Subscriber Home” window with all exclusive content. This ranges from posts, videos, and anything under the sun that could be worth the money.

Why was this created in the first place? According to Mosseri, this development was inspired by the intent of providing creators with sustainable and consistent income. With a subscription system, money will be coming to your favorite creators on a more consistent basis depending on their subscriber count. This is moving forward from the partnerships and other income-generating methods we’ve seen in the past over social media.

We’re still not sure which countries will be getting this feature first, but we are quite certain that it will arrive on our shores some time after release.

What do you think? Would it be worth it for you to give this a try? Let us know in the comments!
