Aside from its next-gen under-display camera, OPPO announced a number of new camera innovations at its Future Imaging Technology Event. Among the new innovations, OPPO revealed in the event include a next-generation RGBW sensor, a true optical zoom system, and a camera with an five-axis OIS system.
The RGBW sensor adds white subpixels, of which OPPO claims up to 60% more light sensitivity and up to 35% less noise than current RGB sensors . With a better manufacturing process and improved demosaicing algorithms, OPPO said that an RGBW sensor is more feasible this time around, and expects it to be available to its phones by Q4 2021.
OPPO’s more ambitious next-gen camera tech is its true optical zoom. Similar to what vivo announced in the APEX 2020 concept phone, OPPO’s solution is better as it covers a wider 85mm-200mm equivalent zoom range (vivo’s approach covered 130mm-195mm). This is made possible with its glass+plastic lens design, along with the use of an ultra-thin high-precision aspheric glass lens to boost optical effects.
OPPO explained that this approach ensures consistent white balance and color accuracy throughout the zoom range, but did not give a timeline as to when it will be available commercially on phones.
Rounding up all the next-gen camera tech OPPO announced is their own 5-axis OIS system. Aside from lens-shift and sensor-shift techniques, OPPO’s approach includes movement data the gyroscope. With all three factored in, OPPO claims that it will allow for up to 65% better stabilization than current OIS setups, even rivaling vivo’s gimbal OIS system. Unlike the true optical zoom tech, OPPO plans to introduce phones with 5-axis OIS by the first quarter of 2022.
